In fall hazelnuts drop on their own from the tree. The nuts are mostly harvested by raking them by hand from the ground. Turkey is the world's largest producer of hazelnuts, followed by Italy, Azerbaijan, the United States, Chile, and China. Most of the produce is purchased by the snack food industry.
